Welcome to S’more Outdoor!

A home for overwhelmed people to regain control of their life through spending more time outside. I’m Brett Traudt (pronounced trout, like the fish). I’m an easy going, thoughtful creative who enjoys spending time out in the wild. A place where I feel at home. In fact, my wife jokes (or maybe it’s not) that I would be happy living in a cabin in the woods. Wouldn’t we all.

The truth is, I’d probably go crazy living in the woods for an extended period of time without the ability to connect with others. Just like I go crazy today being in a constant state of connection without spending time outside.

What we need.

I’m sure you’re familiar with the needs of every human being. Some of these include food, water, clothing, shelter and relationships.

What most people don’t realize is there’s another need that’s at the core of our DNA. The need to be in a more visually stimulating environment. A place where we can eliminate the distractions in our life that overwhelm us.

This need is the outdoors.

I believe as we’ve become more connected to people around the world and digitally distracted through our phones and the Internet, we’ve lost our connection to nature and ultimately the connection to ourselves.

Nature is there for us, but we’ve taken it for granted. I’d taken it for granted. 

I woke up one morning, looked in the mirror and saw a man who was overworked and overweight. I was unhappy, unfulfilled, overwhelmed and needed to regain control of my life.

On my next day off, I headed to the mountains to get away from things for a while. To think about who I’d become.

While I was there something started to happen. I discovered the rush of excitement I used to have when I was a kid. When I used to dream, get lost in my surroundings, imagine a world without limitations and experience being fully alive.

That was the day I decided to take my life back and began to live by this quote…

“Keep close to Nature’s heart… and break clear away, once in a while, and climb to the mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean” ~ John Muir

What can S’more Outdoor help you with?

It was my desire to create a place for you to learn about the benefits of being outside and engage in using it to change the way you experience life. To help those of you who’ve tried countless other methods to feel less overwhelmed, reduce stress and live a more balanced life. And to provide you with information about hiking because it’s one of the easiest ways to experience the world in your own backyard (figuratively speaking of course).

S'more OutdoorHere’s a little more about me

I grew up on 8 acres in what we locals called “the river bottom” because it was actually the bottom of what the Ventura River had carved out many years ago. Our home was located on the west side of the small California town of Ojai, a place surrounded by mountains.

It was a strategic move my parents made so we (my two older bothers, younger sister and I) could enjoy a life similar to how they were raised. On land and childhood dreams.

As time went on, I couldn’t wait to graduate and go to college. To be free of parental rules and to get away from such a small place; to travel and see the world. I moved to San Diego, my first experience living in a concrete jungle, to attend college. I’ll spare you the details of the impact freedom had on my studies but after three years I moved back home to help my dad run our family business.

It wasn’t until my first hiking trip in Matilija Canyon, in the mountains above Ojai, when I understood what my parents had done for me by moving us to this small town. And soon enough, I became aware of something so profound… at least for me anyway.

This whole time I had been dreaming about traveling and seeing the world, yet quickly discovered there was no need to travel the world when I had never explored my own backyard.

During the summer my friends and I would load our backpacks and head to the mountains. To explore and have fun. We did this for several years, but then the inevitable time came. I had to be responsible, grow up, move out of my parents house and start building my own life.

For the next five years I worked in the corporate world and was very successful at my job. After all, my dad taught me everything I needed to know. But I was worn out and always eating on the go. I bought into the idea of security and the pleasure of having stuff.

I had stopped camping and spending time on the trail. The comfort of having my own electrical paradise became my new destination of choice because I could be alone and get lost in a world living through others lives.

But that day I woke up and decided to get back to the outdoors was the day I changed who I wanted to be. It was there I remembered those times we headed to the mountains and understood why we went there. It restored us and filled us up so we could prepare for the coming week.

The outdoors is like spending time with your best friend. They encourage, inspire and lift you up. They help you think through a problem or answer a question. They help you feel better when life seems too hectic or when there’s a life changing event. They’re music to your soul and they’ll always give you what you need most… a connection to something greater than yourself.

It’s now my mission to share what I’ve learned from my time in the outdoors. My desire is to help you live a better story through reconnecting with nature and start living the life you were meant to live.

I promise to encourage, support and share with you a message I care about. I’ll be here to help you improve your life through spending more time outdoors. This isn’t something that will happen overnight, it’s a lifestyle shift, but I guarantee you’ll feel the difference the first time you get outside and focus your awareness on the natural world around you.
